This is just a small sample of the faded, tattered and torn flags that were dropped off from the community ready to retire from service.

I Pledge Allegiance To The Flag
Our community had a ceremony on Flag Day which we had never seen before and thought would be a good lesson in patriotism. We went and watched a flag retirement ceremony. There were over 300 flags dropped off from our small community that were no longer usable and needed to be disposed of in a patriotic and respectful way. The veterans in our area held the formal ceremony, first explaining how the 1923 United States Code states that flags when they are no longer fit for display, should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. It felt good to know that other families in our area felt allegiance to their flag and what it stands for. Hopefully the kids will remember something about the evening besides the great food that was served afterwards.
